Type: Katabori (Sculptural) Netsuke
Material: Wood
Age: Edo Period (1603-1868)
Origin/Maker: Japan. Unsigned.
Size: 1.75" long (4.43 cm), 1.66" wide (4.2 cm), 0.86" tall (2.2 cm)
Weight: 0.4 oz (11 g)
Provenance:
Present: Ryan Snooks collection of Japanese & Asian Decorative Art
Previous: Private Collection
Collected: Vendor at Ventura CA flea market, ~2017. One of my handful (netsuke humor!) of good quality "in the wild" netsuke finds in the US (I've had probably less than 10), this was super-glued onto a leather hippie bracelet at a booth selling mostly crystals and such. Lots of prying eventually got the glue out of the himotoshi (cord holes).
Condition: Item is used in good condition commensurate with age, see photos. Several small chips, and rough spots, some scratches. Some light surface wear.
Subject: Wood netsuke of a cluster of two mushrooms overlapping each other. Arguably a Shunga ("dirty") theme, as was often the case of mushrooms (and eggplants, cucumbers, and so on) in Japanese art.
