Arita, which began producing porcelain in Japan for the first time in the early 17th century, experienced remarkable development in the late 19th century during the Edo and Meiji periods by adopting Western technology. After the Meiji Restoration, free production became possible, and as overseas trade began in earnest, the production of porcelain for overseas markets flourished, spurred by exhibitions at World's Fairs. With its vibrant and gorgeous style, featuring red and gold overglaze decoration on underglaze blue, it gained immense popularity overseas. Organizations such as Koransha, established as a porcelain manufacturing and sales organization, and Fukagawa Seiji, led Arita's porcelain production.

Circa 1878 (Meiji 11) "Made by Kizo, Arita, Hizen, Great Japan"
The base is infused with a jade-green pigment reminiscent of celadon, and features raised designs of flames and clouds. A lustrous, smooth white porcelain dragon and a brightly colored jewel are attached. Due to its pointed base, it cannot stand on its own and comes with a decorative porcelain stand. A similar example is believed to have been exhibited at the Paris World's Fair.

青磁のような翡翠色の顔料を練り込んだ素地に、盛上で火焔や雲の文様を描き、艶やかで滑らかな白磁の龍と色鮮やかな宝珠を貼り付けている。尖底のため自立せず、磁器製の装飾的なスタンドが付属する。類例が、パリ万国博覧会の出品作とされている。

Tsuji Hitachi (14th generation)

He is the 14th generation of the Tsuji family, who supplied porcelain to the Imperial Household. The original piece was produced by the Seiji Company around 1883 (Meiji 16), exhibited at the 1893 (Meiji 26) Chicago World's Fair, and was considered a masterpiece.

日肥山深川造 (Ni Hi Yama Fukagawa zo: 日 Ni refers to 日本 (Nippon (Japan)), 肥 Hi refers to 肥前 (Hizen Province (Present day Saga Prefecture)), 山 Yama refers to 有田皿山 (Arita Sarayama (the location of the kiln)), and 深川造 Fukagawa zo means "made by Fukagawa"). This mark was used by Koransha before the company divided and Fukagawa Seiji was established in 1894

肥碟山信甫造 (Hi cho zan Shin po zo) (Made by Hichozan Shinpo)

蔵春亭三保造 (Zoshuntei Sanpo Zu) (Zoshun shop, Made by Sanpo) - From 1842 to 1870. Shop owned by Hisatomi Yojibei Masatsune, who as one of the first potters in the area of Arita and Mikawachi that was granted an export permit by the Lord of the Arita ,Han Lord Nabeshima Naomasa (1814-1871) in 1842. This was also the first time it was allowed to put a signature on pieces exported from Arita, other than Fuku (Happiness) or various copies of Chinese reign marks. His business was succeeded by Masatsune's oldest son, Masayasu (1812-1878) and his younger brother, Yohei Masaoki (1832-1871) until Yohei's sudden death in the sea. In 1911, Masayasu's nephew, Hisatomi Kikuro (1862-1937) restored his family business with a modern factory method, but only lasted for 15 years, until 1926.

Tadaji, the second son of Eizaemon Fukagawa (the eighth generation), established the company in 1894 (Meiji 27) after separating from Koransha, using a mark of Mount Fuji and flowing water as its logo. Tadaji utilized his proficiency in foreign languages and applied the knowledge he gained from traveling to various countries in Europe and America to his business, while also making the most of his free time to personally visit the factories and share the hardships with the craftsmen.
Fukagawa ware is characterized by its "Fukagawa Blue" and red enamel, which captivated Europe and America, and a large-scale work exhibited at the 1900 Paris World's Fair won a gold medal. The highly designed Fukagawa style, including iris motifs, is said to have been created by referencing the Rinpa and Jakuchu styles, which were attracting attention overseas.
In 1911 (Meiji 44), the company was incorporated as a joint-stock company, which was rare at the time, and the former feudal lord, the Nabeshima family, also became a shareholder and provided support. The workshop from that time, where raw materials are used for manufacturing, is still in operation today.
Chuji also played an active role as a politician, serving as the mayor of Arita town and contributing to his local community.

The establishment of Koransha in 1875 (Meiji 8) led to an expansion of ceramic exports from Arita.

Eizaemon Fukagawa 深川栄左衛門(八代)

In 1868, the first year of the Meiji era, Eizaemon Fukagawa (the eighth generation) received permission from the domain to engage in trade. In 1875, the eighth generation Eizaemon, along with Suminōsuke Fukami, Katsuzō Tsuji, and Kamenōsuke Tezuka, established Kōransha, one of Japan's earliest porcelain manufacturing and sales companies.
